Goals compete for time, attention, money, and care. When circumstances change, continuing every goal at full intensity may make all of them harder to serve.
There are several different decisions available:
- Narrow it: keep the direction, but reduce the scope.
- Pause it: keep the goal without asking it to compete right now.
- Complete it: acknowledge that the meaningful outcome has been reached, even if more could be done.
- Release it: decide that this is no longer a promise you want to carry.
Research on goal adjustment suggests that being able to disengage from unattainable goals and re-engage elsewhere can matter for well-being. That does not tell you which goal to release. It does challenge the idea that persistence is always the wisest response.
Steady preserves these as explicit choices. A smaller active set makes your real priorities easier to see.
